Ireland v Australia Nov 2006- International rules
It’s not a moment the GAA will want to remember, but no Gael can forget that second test of the 2006 International Rules series between Ireland and Australia.
In the first meeting between the teams in Galway, Graham Geraghty was cited for a knee to the head of Australia’s Lindsay Gilbee.
Then in the Second Test in Croke Park, a tackle by Australia’s Danyle Pearce on Geraghty left the Meath player unconscious and requiring hospitalisation. The act was considered a ‘square up’, further adding tensions to the series.
There were several further ugly on-field incidents which left the future of the games hanging by a thread until they were successfully restaged in Australia last year.
