Ash trees planted as part of 125 year celebrations

The Ulster camogie and Ulster ladies football boards have joined forces to launch an initiative to create a people’s forest by planting 10,000 ash trees on various sites across the province.

As part of the GAA’s 125 year celebrations, the trees are being planted to help make hurls in years to come and it averaged that it takes 10,000 trees to make enough hurling sticks to keep the country’s clubs and counties going for one year.

All Ulster clubs are being asked to buy five ash saplings at £25 each in order to raise money for the camogie and ladies boards, while also creating hurls for themselves.

It takes an ash tree 25 years to reach a mature stage where hurls can be manufactured from the timber meaning the next generation will be looked after.
